Claude Monet

First Grade: Linnea in Monet's Garden

Shaving cream and elmers glue!

This is every student's favorite.  The thick paint mixture is fun, easy and a great way to explore Claude Monet's style as an impressionist.

We discussed his life and works in a slide presentation and watched a WONDERFUL
video called Linnea in Monet's Garden.  I highly recommend this great story which is available through Netflix.

I use about 1 part glue to every 4 parts shaving cream.  You may color it with tempra as needed.
 Water Lily Pond

  • After the introduction of Monet's style

  • fill containers with the paint recipe- slightly colored in a blue tint

  • continue to add more blue (or blue/violet) as students twist long blobs and smears on their boards or paper

  • let dry

  • next class- add the lily pads and flowers with the same process

  • encourage kids to have objects fall off the edge
